Vintage Arthur Rackham prints from
J.M Barrie's "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens"

The prints are, or were, "tipped" (glued on top edge only) to a larger backing paper. Some are no longer attached to the backing paper. See details below each thumbnail.
The backing paper, if still present, measures about 17.125 x 18.25 inches. Image sizes vary and are noted below the thumbnail images.
DUE TO THE LARGE SIZE OF THESE SHEETS, THE PRINTS WILL BE MAILED IN A SHIPPING TUBE IF THEY ARE STILL ATTACHED TO BACKING PAPER.

Arthur Rackham

ARTHUR RACKHAM (1867-1939)

Arthur Rackham is widely regarded as one of the leading illustrators from the 'Golden Age' of British book illustration which encompassed the years from 1900 until the start of the First World War. During that period, there was a strong market for high quality illustrated books that typically were given as Christmas gifts. Many of Rackham's books were produced in a de luxe limited edition, often vellum bound and sometimes signed, as well as a larger, less ornately bound quarto 'trade' edition. This was often followed by a more modestly presented octavo edition in subsequent years for particularly popular books. The onset of the war in 1914 curtailed the market for such quality books, and the public's taste for fantasy and fairies also declined in the 1920s.
Arthur Rackham's works have become very popular since his death, both in North America and Britain. His images have been widely used by the greeting card industry and many of his books are still in print or have been recently available in both paperback and hardback editions. His original drawings and paintings are keenly sought at the major international art auction houses.

Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was originally part of an earlier work, The Little White Bird by J.M. Barrie. The Peter Pan chapters were extracted and published as a separate work in 1906. The color plates to Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens by Arthur Rackham made the book immediately popular, and drew attention to Rackham, who was not well-known before then. The prints offered here are from a large vintage calendar printed in the mid 1970s to mid 1980s.

The Serpentine is a lovely lake, and there is a drowned forest at the bottom of it. If you peer over the edge you wcan see the trees all growing upside down, and they say that at night there are drowned stars in it.
